Culture of Equitant Oncidium
Equitant oncidiums are easy to grow and produce flower. However experience helps to get them to flower many times a year
Light
Light is the most important factor for equitant oncidiums. Interestingly unlike other orchids adequate light darkens their leaves and gives them a purple or copper tint. Bright sunlight is necessary for flowering but should not be direct sunlight.
Humidity
Like other oncidiums
humidity is important for equitants. A humidity of 60-70% is recommended. Misting twice a day will help achieve this.
Watering
Good drainage is necessary. Allow the medium to dry completeley before rewatering. The roots of equitants are 'salt sensitive'. Hence it is better to use non-chlorinated water like rain water or ground water as much as possible.
(Misting for too long and too frequently can be harmful for the plants as the roots remain wet throughout the day)
Fertilizer
Actively growing plants
will benefit from high phosphorus fertilizers for good growth of the roots (NPK 15-30-15). In general NPK 20-20-20 will be good enough for growth and flowering.
Temperature
You will be surprised that temperature is not an issue for equitants. They can grow from 14 Deg C
to 34 Deg C. Higher dry temperatures needs frequent misting.
Air Circulation
Air circulation is desirable for equitants. It helps maintain the humidity by evaporation.
Potting
Smaller pots are preferred. The pots are best just fit for the rooting system.
